Skills Development

Editing Skills acquired so far:

  • Basetrack editing is brushed upon since AS year and is much better this year
  • Tiling edit technique of the artist in different locations
  • Other effects such as fade-in-out/cross dissolve and so forth
  • Adjustment of the volume in the song
  • Lip-syncing and the actual song, making sure it matches

Production: Skills Development

Through the process of editing our music video, I have learnt a variety of new editing techniques. Although most of the editing has been done by other members of my media group, I have observed most of the techniques used.

  • layering base tracks
  • fade in & fade out
  • colour tinting - black and white

Production - Improvements needed before FINAL

Before our final deadline, will have some minor problems that need improving. On recent feedback from our teachers and peers, some of the feedback consisted of:

We will mainly focus on the lip syncing as this is the main aspect our audience will focus on, and if it's out of sync it will ruin the whole video.
We used the split screen at the beginning of our video because we had feedback a few weeks ago, saying we had no closeups at the beginning, therefore we thought the close up, split screens, in different locations, would resolve this problem as well as make the video a lot more interesting.

Production: Rough Cut - target audience feedback

We received feedback from our target audience about our music video's rough cut.

PRODUCTION: Analysis of Rough Cut

Before the rough cut was uploaded, I was already aware of the problems in it but I wanted there to be a clear improvement between the Rough and Final cut.
There were several problems in the rough cut video which I have taken screen shots of underneath.

Keywords from Louisa feed back, all of which I have addressed in my video.

PRODUCTION: Editing Problems *NOTICE*

Recently, during a workshop session the group video drive has stopped working and there isn't a recent copy in the safe space 'autosave vault'. This is a problem as I cannot upload the rough cut AND I'll have to re-edit everything from an old autosave from another computer.
I have copied and pasted the video files from the memory cards and put them into another empty video drive.

I think the following picture sums up my current feelings accurately.

Nonetheless, I can't let this bring my moral down and I'll make sure (Along with the help of the rest of the group) that the edit is completed asap and the final version is done by the deadline.

Rough Cut Teacher Feedback

The general feedback received from teachers is that the music video is genre appropriate and we have plenty of atmospheric frames filmed. However the main flaw that is weakening the video and it's quality is the build up in the lyrics does not mirror the visuals, and is not intense enough. In order to tackle this we will merely use a vast variety of shots coming up to/and during the build up.
Another flaw is the introduction of the artist in the beginning is weak as there are no close up/mid shots of him. Instead we have a long shot which introduces the music video, so that will be changed too.

PRODUCTION: BASE TRACK EDIT LAID

SO, after two lessons and a workshop, the base track edit is laid !
Although the other method is preferred, now the LONG (rendering took almost 20mins) and tedious part of this editing technique is over with, the real editing can be started. This technique also required all the useable clips to be labelled (so we know which are/aren't base tracks) so this is also going to save me time in the rest of the editing.
Today we will be re-filming some more southbank shots and after labelling those I will get onto rough cut editing for the deadline next week !

PRODUCTION: Editing - Original rough cut feedback

This picture shows the 3 main base tracks for our song laid, some are cut up using the slicing tool and other.

After some feedback from Louisa, It was suggested that the base track method should be used instead as the lip synching in our shots aren't so clear. fEEDBACK

PRODUCTION: Creating a Brand Image

This is a screenshot of me working on a prototype logo/brand image for our artist: Prototype.
After deciding that the Ying/Yang Necklace was to be our running image throughout the video I tried to make a visual that would represent that, In the final copy I plan to have the ying/yang symbol replacing the middle 'O' of the word.

Production- Reflection

On our four days of filming we shot a lot of footage which we are definitely able to work with. We got around six maybe even more base tracks and plenty of cut away and separate parts of filming to put in our music video.

Our location choices Regents Park, Southbank, small park, were good for filming in because they both contrasted each other. The parks show quietness with not many people, and Southbank was very busy, but it's good to swap between locations which will make our music video interesting to watch. It's also good because we contrasted between rural(park) and urban(south bank).

Costume was good for most days except, day four when we were filming at Southbank, Victoria (the girlfriend) forgot to wear the same top as the other days, therefore this will need re-shooting on another day. I think the costume we chose to use for singer and girlfriend were good ones because they were simple and casual, which is also good for our target audience who are young, therefore this will interest them.

So as I've explained, we only have very small and minimal changes, such as the costume faulty footage which will be really quick and easy to re-film.

Reflection on Progress

Media Studies AS Coursework was overall a B grade. However this year I feel that I am less detailed and am using less technology.
I am working on this however, and keep updating my work. For instance, instead of having a long display of photos, I have moved it all onto Photobucket.

Last year my group also didn't use an Instagram account, whereas this year we have alongside twitter.

I also used iMovie to make the Animatic for our music video.

Production: Reflection

Here I outlined some of the main issues that we have been faced with as a group during filming.

Updated Production Schedule / TimeToast

[PRODUCTION] Extra Filming

During post-production we looked for all the footage and noticed how sparse our footage in Myddelton  Square Gardens in comparison to what we captured in Regents' Park and Southbank. As the park is not  far from our college we have decided that we will film some extra footage there; as we are ahead in our filming schedule we believe we have more than enough time to film.

[PLANNING] Analysis of Original Video

At the time of writing this, there currently isn't a music video of Example's The Evolution of Man. So instead I chose to analyse another music video of his which we will borrow similar aspects from.

The 16 screens shot we wish to incorparate in our music video.
The editing in particular is interesting with it's fast pace and more visually appealing techniques such as split screens and wipe transitions. During the beginning, as the song proceeds the screens split into two until final becoming 16 screens, this effect is very entertaining and also looks like something which we can produce.

[PRODUCTION] Developed Skills

During the production of our music video I developed many skills such as:

The email we sent Starbucks for permission to film.
  • Careful planning of mise-en-scene e.g. correct props, costumes, locations etc.
  • A well structured time table for filming to allow for flexibility and for any extra filming required.
  • Having asked for permission when filming on private property; something which I never had to do during my AS project.
  • Learning how to adapt to unexpected events such as when it rained or when we were denied permission to film in Starbucks.

Production: Skills Development

A2 PLANNING COMPARED TO AS

Production- Skills Development

For my coursework this year, I think I have approached production in a more organised way unlike in my AS coursework, where I feel I rushed most of the work, this may of been because it was my first time at putting together a plan and every other aspect together, I didn't really take much time to look at it carefully. Therefore this year I feel I have took to each area of production more carefully and more organised. However I do think I need to keep up with blogging, as this is obviously one of the main parts of my coursework grade.
